Before the war, Gorazde was a highly developed industrial municipality, with almost 14,000 employed persons. According to statistics for December 1998, Gorazde had only 4 127 registered employed persons, 20% of which were employed in non-industrial sectors. According to the same source, there were 2 600 persons registered at the Institute for Employment as unemployed.

Before the war, the industrial sector was significantly dominant over agriculture. A wide range of industries offered large employment capacities. Chemical, metal, textile and military industries were present in Gorazde municipality. Nowadays, all industrial plants work at a lower capacity and with a decreased number of employees, due to the war destruction.

| 5.5 Income Generation Projects | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
"Cow Bank Project" targets to support the most vulnerable women groups and their families. Forty-one women received a cow. The purpose of the project is to improve food quality of these families, and help them earn an income. UNHCR Bosnian Women Initiative (BWI) is implementing the project. Summejja- Rehabilitation of the pastry factory in Gorazde. When the building reconstruction and equipment installation were finished, six women, beneficiaries of this project, started to work on pastry production. The project is also funded by BWI. "OXFAM" (Oxford Committee for Famine Relief) runs several income generation projects: egg production (for displaced persons and single mothers), mushrooms production (for single mothers, war invalids, unemployed), rehabilitation of the plant for drying up herbs and mushrooms, blacksmith-tinsmith workshop for the disabled, carpentry workshop for demobilised soldiers, honey production in co-operation with "Bagrem", Bee-masters Association, and laundry services in co-operation with "Anima" Women Association.

| 5.7 Micro Credit Projects | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
"ALDI" (Association of Local Development and Initiative) is a local organisation, which provides micro-credits for agricultural and small business projects in Gorazde. Loans are in amounts from 500 DEM up to 5 000 DEM, depending on the project. These loans are for returnees, residents, demobilised soldiers and invalids. "KfW" offers loans for housing reconstruction in amounts of 25,000 DEM up to 35,000 DEM, repayment period of 12 years, and the interest rate ranges from 8% to 10% annually. Furthermore, KfW offers micro-credit loans for revitalisation and opening of small and medium scale enterprises with up to 50 employees. These loans range from 5,000 DEM to 100,000 DEM, five years repayment, with interest rate of 12% to 16%. Those who obtain this loan should pay a one-term bank fee in amount of 1% of the total loan.
